After 3 failed hunts, I think im going morel crazy!!!Im finding myself thinking of a hot plate of fried mushrooms 24/7:(Its ALMOST as bad as thinking of opener day of bow season….I tried to block the morel madness with some coors-light, but it didnt work, only made it worse…..Thinking i may have to goto morel rehab;)

Me and 3 buddies went out yesterday, in the course of about 2 hours we found 100.  mostly peckerheads but the rest were small yellows and a couple nice greys.  Went this afternoon behind the house,  found 3.  One nice grey and 2 yellows half-eaten by bugs.  I’m with coot,  next 3 days look promising.

by the way, those fried mushrooms went good with the deer roast that’d been in the crockpot all day!

Half-free, snake head, cows head.  Several different names for them. Peckerhead is the most “fitting” name!  They can be confused with false morels, so when you harvest them, make sure there isn’t cotton-like substance in the stem.  That’s a false morel and can cause an upset stomach even though they aren’t technically poisonous.  I’ve never found a false morel though.  All the ones I have found are true half-frees.

What?!!!  You can’t be serious Freak!  Not that she calls you that!  I believe that!  Peckerheads are a type of mushroom!  I can’t really describe one or tell you why it’s called that!  Too graphic!  Google is all I can tell you.  Make sure the kids are not in the room cause you might have to close the page.  Strong emphasis on mushroom when you search!
Tastes just like a morel or pumpkin blossum lol!

Yes, make sure the kids aren’t in the room.  Actually, Andy we might need to just post some pictures on here so he doesn’t end up finding something on google he shouldn’t!

I’m 0 for 3 as well. I’m going to give it a shot again today and see if my luck doesn’t turn around. I gotta have something to eat with those crappie filets!
