I was wondering what others opinions are and what they would do.  I didn’t get a deer this year.  Probably due to passing on everything during the season with plans to shoot anything mature (doe or buck) at the end only to have all the deer disappear.  Then I found it.  Someone had put a stand right smack in the area the does bed in and right on the main trail deer use to funnel onto my property.  I am the only person with permission to hunt on this neighboring property.  I called the landowner he confirmed no one else had permission and to tear it doown and throw it away.  I really wanted to catch this person so I called the warden.  He recommended to wait during the LWS and see if the person shows up.  I did, he didn’t.  Normally I completely leave this area alone so that is why I didn’t discover the stand until too late.  Now I am wondering if I should take it down or leave it and concentrate on catching someone next year.  Or take it down and hunt the area myself next year.  Both situations will likely ruin my hunting next year too.  What would you do?

I’d take it down, chain it to the tree with my lock and put as many trail cams as I could as high as I could as to not to be seen so when the SOB comes back to get his stand I would have a shot or two of him!

Heck of an idea Raybz.  Your own big chain and lock.  But I would leave it up in the tree where it is.  That way he will see it from a distance and think all is well.  He may not even come in close if he doesn’t see it up in the tree.

Thanks for the suggestions.  Based on the fact that the season is over and the stand is still there I am going to take it down next weekend, leave a note, and hunt the area hard next season.  When I locate the person I am calling the warden.

You may let your local warden know prior to the season. I did an internship with the IDNR CPO’s and they really do watch problem area’s closely. If you let him/her know early on it could be an extra set of eyes at your disposal. If you wait untill after the fact the “damage” has already been done. Not sure what county your in, but I know a few officers on the personal level and they really do love their jobs and are there to assist you if need be.
