A day of hanging stands and cutting shooting lanes, turned into a load of puffballs that for some reason we had to bring back with us.  They all ended up being target practice.  But my dad and I couldn’t remember when we ever say this many and THIS BIG.  We weren’t even looking for them.  They were just everywhere.

The first find.  He was excited for something new.  The day changed to finding mushrooms for him.

Ever since we have been getting the rain they are all over the woods. At first I thought they were grabage and was going to pick them up till I walked up on them. I haven’t seen them this big in many years.

They were fun shooting.  Would throw the small ones up and shoot them.  They explode nicely

They didn’t weigh that much.  That one he is holding in that second pic was probably only a couple pounds.  The brown ones were nasty and filled with water like a sponge.

If found at the right time can’t you eat them?

yes, get them early enough.  I think some of these were good.  I have never tried them.  But always heard about slicing them up and pan frying.  Don’t think they are all that good.

A couple of years ago I was at a GTG and a guy sliced them up and used the mushroom like a pizza crust and cooked them on a grill…It was actually pretty good…The only way I have ever had them so?....

They’re good, we either fry them in butter or batter them and fry them.  If you google it, you’ll find a bunch of recipes.  Pretty safe mushroom.  No dangersous look-alikes when they are large—certain amanitas (deadly) grow in a sack and can be mistaken for them (smaller ones), but if you cut into them, you will see the developing mushroom, instead of the smooth flesh of a puffball.  Also, make sure they are young and fresh (i.e., white and solid).  Found some last week too.
