Growing up and still just living just West of Springfield I just loved watching the Air Guard’s F-4’s taking off and landing from the airport. When they phased them out and brought in the F-16’s it was still awesome to watch, till they moved them all to Indiana. It was cool when they left the airport with afterburners kicked in and having two engines it was loud, but by the time they got over us they had altitude. But landing was something else, they would circle over our little town so low you could see the pilots in the cock pits and there was usually 2 or 3 to a flight, same thing with the F-16’s. I never got over watching them no matter how old I was. One thing I will never forget and this was when the 16’s were still here, on the night of 9/11 the President was coming on the TV to address the nation around 9PM. I guess the military figured that everyone knew where he was going to be they were taking no chances. I had my front door opened and them planes just started pouring out of Capital Airport, I think they had around 26 jets, and it sounded like all of them took off or as many that were flyable at least, the sound was un-godly all them taking off in full afterburner. It will a sound that I will take to my grave.

when i lived in st louis, my apartment complex was on the northwesterly approach to lambert, and every once in awhile we’d catch the F-15s coming in. you havent lived until you hear the sound of a F-15.

and when i was a child the airport in grand island NE, (former B-29 base) my hometown, had a wing of Air Defense Command F-106’s.
