You sitting in your stand like any other day and all of the sudden a gorgeous 230” typical 12 point is walking your way.  Well of course your going to shoot it.  But what about afterwards?  You soon realize that what you have in front of you is a WORLD RECORD buck.  A record that many have thought would never be broken.  You are the man, everyone is going to want to interview you, post your picture all over the place, phone will be ringing non stop, invites to shows all over the country, countless TV appearances and your mailbox full of free stuff every day.  You are a star.  You just won the Hunter’s Lottery.  What could be better, right?  Do you really want that?  You are now under a microscope.  Everyone will be a skeptic.  People will be digging in your background to find anything you have done wrong in the past just to ruin you and your glory.  Rumors will be all over the place saying you poached it somehow.  No matter what proof you have, people will never believe you or anyone was able to shoot a deer of that quality under fair chase.  Maybe in a couple years you will gain your good name back and prove to everyone that the deer is legal.  But is it worth it?

To me, no way.  We have all spent enough time on the internet to know how people react to a “world record” claim.  Most people congratulate like they should, but almost just as many will criticize the accomplishment.  For me there is nothing out there that is worth the possible constant harassment from people all over the county.  I know, it may end not being that bad, but someone will say something or make something up and that will spread everywhere in a matter of minutes.  Its not worth it.  Would I hide the buck, not totally.  I would let a picture of the deer get out just because its a great deer and everyone should see it.  But you would never see my mug in a picture with it or hopefully never see my name tied to it.  Thats just me.  Oh ya, if I ever win the power or mega ball, I wouldn’t even tell my wife.  lol

I would love to kill a world record and I wouldn’t hide it either.  If I did it right, and I would, you ca look all day for issues and talk all you want.  I will hopefully be able to show everyone that an everyday guy can get a shot at a record.  I really don’t even think all that much would be said about me in a negative way.  Sure the DNR would look into it, but they should.  I wouldn’t care.  No rumors or threats of rumors would stop me from being proud of one heck of a hunt.

I would think I was having a flash back from my younger years and probably fall out of the stand land on the buck and be gored to death.

If you truly have nothing to hide, then i dont see the problem. Haters are going to hate…I work hard for my deer and i wouldnt let the muckrakers of society weigh on my conscious. If god/nature gives you the extremely rare opportunity to take such a trophy under legitimate conditions then i dont know how you dont take it. Part of the problem is that hunting has become so commercialized that racks are now worth major money and with that always comes complications…kinda like running for president. everyone wants to expose your dirty laundry..but again..im not in this for the money or the fame, I hunt because i love it and if i shoot a deer of that nature i would accept the fame and endure the BS.

I would have the deer shown for everyone to see but I would TRY(big emphasis on try because I know that would be hard to do) to stay anonymous.

I would either shake so bad the buck spots me and runs away white-flaggin, or I’d have to call someone to bring me a clean pair of pants and a fourwheeler.  Actually, either way I would probably have to have the change of pants LOL

First of all, I would be assisted by the landowner and local cpo. I wouldn’t even attempt to follow a blood trail without absolute proof by witness. If the deer was truly a new record, I wouldn’t take any chances of losing it due to haters and jealous wanna bees.
As for the nonstop attention, I guess it comes with it.

I like the idea of getting a witness for the recovery especially a cpo.  That would end most future ramblings.
