Well said, Tom Micetich.

“If deer numbers have declined to less than desirable levels, again, hunters are advised to back off of their doe harvest. Just because a season is offered does not mean you must hunt it.”

“Hunters and property managers may want to talk with those hunting and managing surrounding property to share their concerns. Problems exist when neighbors have differing ideas for managing the same deer.”

Im sure MOST working for dnr have a brain. The problem is that we could talk till we are blue in the face and it wont help. Curtain people have certain ways and could give a crap less about the overall deer herd. Its the ones who HAVE to fill all tags for ALL seasons and don’t give a crap….Its the numbers game to a lot and those who love to brag that they filled 6-7 tags and could of filled more…Hunt public ground for a year and youll meet plenty of them…....

It’s the DNR’s job to manage wildlife and provide opportunity to take game animals. I see a permit as an ok from the state that an animal can be harvested. The DNR sees a permit sale as a funding source. While it is ultimately up to us to make the final decision, we can’t expect 180,000 hunters to be wildlife biologists. I think another reason the harvest has dropped so low this year is partly because people are second guessing their decisions to shoot deer when they’re not seeing as many. But we still have people who would shoot the last deer in the county if it walked by them during the LWS… and they already had 5 in the freezer.

If the state sold 1 million permits, should they blame all the hunters if they shot shot every last whitetail in the state?

The DNR has always thought that the more you limited hunters, the more they are inclined to fill the permits you give them. But by selling unlimited permits, you also give hunters the perception that there’s plenty of deer to kill.

Agreed Kevin and WF. My neighbors have 80 acres next to me and complain year after year about not seeing as many deer every year. EVery year I tell them to back off the numbers they kill and maybe theyll see more, and what do they do? Shoot every damn deer that walks by them and say “Well I figured I better shoot it cuz I’m not seein very many”. I just shake my head in disgust. There are 9 of them that hunt the 80 acres. That shouldnt even be legal!

Perfectly said KC. We as a people have become dependent on the government to tell us right from wrong. The thousands of new laws put on the books each year, each one that imprisons us a bit more, are unfortunately necessary to keep a species in check genetically disposed to short sightedness and greed. Remove all of the hunting laws and in 10 years there would barely be a critter of any kind to be found anywhere. The ethical educated hunters out there (like most who log on to this site), are in the minority and their voices aren’t loud enough to be heard. The government needs to take the lead to fix this thing, and then we can help. Without them, it will never get done.
