Looking to take an overnight trip to southern Illinois this spring for some Crappie/Bluegill action. Just not familiar with area and wondering when and where to go? Can go anytime in April/May. Probably would just pitch a tent in a campground and was wondering if any place down there would rent a boat for a day?
Thanks
Frank

Little Grassy or Rend Lake can rent boats at both.  Little Grassy would put you on both of your requested quarry.

You have any idea what they charge a day for boat rental?

Check with Resort or Marina.  May 1st is usually a can’t miss date for crappie spawn.

The reason I asked how far south is because Mill Creek is a nice lake with good spring crappie and bluegill/redear…

Here is a link with info..

Mill Creek would be even better yet! Closer for me, i live in Danville area. I would love to catch some on the fly rod up on the bank. Do you know if they rent boats there?
Thanks

Yes they rent boats…If you click on link then click on rentals/boat rentals it give the info…Used to fish that lake several times a year…Have not been down there for a couple because of time…Friends still hit the crappie spawn and have very good luck, missed last year because I went for walleye in Ohio…Bluegill is easy fishing all year if you don’t mind cleaning the little ones…The bigger fish drop early and are hard to get on if you don’t know the lake…

The fact that it is an hour from you would make it a great day trip…Never the less the camp ground is very nice and clean…For the better spots you had better call for reservations or you might end up in full sun…Good luck and let us know how it goes…
