A Big Buck for Dad

Mon, December 05, 2011

The Saturday of 2nd gun started quite slow for me.  After seeing 13 deer the previous morning, I never even saw a squirrel on this morning.  I only sat until about 9:15 and I went up to where the vehicles were parked to talk things over with my Dad.  We spoke for a few minutes and then I decided to head back to his house and try to figure out what to do next.  Dad had other plans.  He told me he was going to go sit in a different location for awhile.

Dad had barely got to his new location when he looked over and saw the deer he was after.  After a heart shot, followed by a quick recovery, he found himself tagging this big, unique buck.  It is a mainframe 6 point with a large fork on its G-2.

Congrats Dad!

My Mom was the star of the DeNeal’s gun season during the 1st round, but Dad stole the show this time with his 2nd season buck!

Pretty neat!  That’s a big buck for you, mom, and dad this year.  What about brother, no such luck?

Nice deer but is it legally tagged? I may be wrong but isn’t the tag supposed to be on the antlers? Looking for someone else’s opinion on this.

Posted by Webfoot64 on December 05

It is legally tagged.

These directions are straight off the back of the tag:
“Tagging:Immediately upon kill and before deer is moved, transported or field dressed the hunter must cut out the designated notch on the leg tag to invalidate it, and the tag shall be attached and properly sealed (see Figure 1). A head tag is also provided to hunters which must be used if the head or antlers are delivered to a taxidermist.”

Before caping the deer out, the head tag was applied so it could be taken to the taxidermist.  My family is very strict and adamant about the laws, so we check everything each year to ensure we are following them.

Thanks for checking though.-Darin DeNeal

Okay, my land owner tags do not have notches nor do my kid’s shotgun tags. Must be a different type of tag. Congrats on the nice buck.

The notch it is referring to is just a triangle on the bottom of the tag.  It is only on the leg tag because that is the one that must be applied immediately.  The hunter is the one that makes the notch with a knife by cutting out the triangle.  I don’t know for sure, but I don’t think the over the counter tags have this, but any mail ordered tag I have ever seen had it (in recent years).

I just laugh when I see posts from people like WEBFOOT64.  Why not ask Darin if he was sure to have driven the exact speed limit, came to a complete stop at every stop sign, used his turn signal at each turn, etc. all on his way out to hunt, too?

WEBFOOT64 I dont know what state your landowner tags are for then because mine and every landowner in Illinois I know has the notch area on both archery and firearm for deer and all landowner turkey tags. You might want to look at yours a little closer so you don’t get pinched for a simple oversight. Beside that great deer!

Oh man, that is one cool buck, NICE!

Gilly and Agger, They are LaSalle county tags in which we are required to take our deer to the check station to be tested for CWD. There are no notches on the tag. One is for the check station and the other is a head/leg tag. Directions state to place tag on antler of deer with antler length over 3 inches or place on the leg of the antlerless deer. EXCUSE ME for not saying that in the first place. I have not seen the type of tag you are talking about so there must be different kinds if you are not required to go to a check station. I guess you guys made a mistake yourself in assuming you knew everything about deer tags.

My appology to the DeNeals. Again as I said before, that is a great buck, congrats.

No apologies necessary to the DeNeals.  I didn’t mind the question.  It allowed us all to learn something about the different tags in Illinois.-Darin DeNeal

WEBFOOT64 I too apologize for coming of as an expert it is interesting to know that even the landowners tags in the CWD areas are different. A wise man once said “The day you stop learning is the day you die”
